Previous to adopting a gimmicky mask and the new stage name SBTRKT, DJ Aaron Jerome experimented with both trip hop and chill out music. Since the mask was added, Jerome has added the genre of dubstep to his resume and concocted a bland but coherent eponymous debut album filled with polished guest vocalists and rhythms devoid of any interesting characteristics.
“Heatwave” generates no real heat although it does cleanly spin its wheels mightily. Eight of the 11 tracks on SBTRKT feature the some of the most innocuous guest vocals to appear on a dance album this year. Super smooth Sampha takes the lead vocal on five of the albums tracks and while some might consider his vocals soulful, I’ll go the alternative route and consider a trip to the dentist’s waiting room more fulfilling.
